Volkswagen of America has introduced an electric van to celebrate the rename of its electronics research laboratory to the California Center for Innovation and Engineering.
Called the Type 20 concept car, this van is based on the 1962 Type2 Microbus and has a variety of experimental components including "tactile objects and interactive electronics."
This van has a two-tone paint job with a contrasting orange band at the bottom. The designer also created custom wheels and mirror stands that are organically inspired to make them sturdy and lightweight.
Inside, the driver will find front seats and a custom steering wheel. The concept also has a stylish section and a stylish rug with geometric patterns.
Elsewhere, the Type 20 is equipped with a LookingGlassII holographic display. Volkswagen says it can generate 3D images without special glasses.

The van also has directional microphones and voice recognition technology. One of the microphones is mounted outside and it enables people to "speak" to command the vehicle. In this case, the car will provide feedback via LED headlights and flashes of the Volkswagen logo.
Power is provided by a 10 kWh battery that powers a 120-horsepower (89 kW / 122 square foot) and 173 pound-feet (235 Nm) torque motor.
Interestingly, this van uses a custom active aerodynamic suspension developed in cooperation with Porsche.
The latter's capabilities seem to be linked to the van's real-time facial recognition system. It uses a 720p wide-angle camera to identify people using the SensorySDK and NvidiaJetsonTX2 prototype development kit.
Although the Type 20 is just a concept, Volkswagen will provide a mass-produced version of the IDBUZZ concept. It will arrive in 2022 and become an electric van.
